Melody Guy - Signs of Trouble
By Rebecca Hosking

Melody Guy is a force to reckon with. She is hitting Nashville like a storm with tight lyrics and driving guitar, telling stories we all know and love. I had the honor of playing a round with her one night. I was blown away, and I was also a bit frightened to play after her. After all, how do you follow a performance like hers? Signs of trouble is a collection of her writing talents, but to see the true divine musical experience she must be seen live!

Signs of trouble is just that. Melody is trouble for anyone trying to make it as a songwriter in the industry today. She is the one you need to top, the competition, the standard we should all be striving for. With songs like All That’s Left Is Me so cleverly written about lost love and being used up, Melody definitely raises the bar. Ouch! I know what your thinking but no one can quite hurt you like Melody Guy does. The title track is backed with rockin’ music and vocals that border on a resemblance of Melissa Etheridge. The entire CD has precise production and spot on vocals and storylines with attention grabbing hooks. My favorite song on the entire album was Another Teenage Mother. I don’t think I’ll need to spell that one out for you, but I have never witnessed a story flow the way this one does. I was expecting the entire album to be a lot more country but it turned out to be folksy Ameriana with an edge. Just grab it for yourself and make your own judgment. There are unexpected turns all over the place that keep you on your toes, make you laugh and cry and celebrate what is going on in Melody’s head.

There’s not much else I can say about this lady except thank you for doing what you do and paving the way for future writers and performers. I hope we will see a lot more in the near future.

I give this 4 1/2 guitars out of 5, can’t wait for your next album.

Rebecca's rating:
4 1/2 out of 5 guitars

Melody Guy has found her own groove in the writing department. When Melody sings, the audience is wooed into silence as they listen to her every word. Melody brings a fresh approach to country music and possesses a beautiful, plaintive voice that easily conveys her well-crafted songs of love, loss and emotion. At a recent performance at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with her band members, Carl Melberg, Matthew Burgess, Duane Hitchings and Ladd Smith, Melody received a standing ovation to her song "Mistakes Like Me" written about her son. and stood alongside chart –topper Andy Griggs and the legendary Tanya Tucker. Melody Guy has a positive and energetic presence and is a powerful, strong performer. Melody’s incredible energy and fabulous vocal phrasing make her one of the most potent talents on the country music scene today. To see her live is to witness pure magic.

SHERWOOD – Don’t be surprised if Melody Guy seems a bit distracted when you talk to her.
Not only is this busy mother trying to sell her house, perform gigs around town and take care of her kids, she is also probably writing a song as she talks to you.

“I constantly have lyrics in my head,” she explained.

The singer-songwriter is so filled with inspiration, she is constantly scrambling to find a pen or jotting down lyrics in her checkbook.

“If I have to go pick up the guitar, then I know it’s pretty powerful,” she said.
Powerful is exactly how people are describing songs from her recent album, “Signs of Trouble.”

With rave reviews and a new song getting noticed wherever it’s played, Guy and her family are ready to take the next step toward making it big by following their musical dreams to Nashville.

The five-day road trip from Sherwood to the heart of country music will take place this summer. Guy has been living in Sherwood since 1997.
Once in Nashville, she plans to make more records, continue touring and sell her songs for other artists to perform.

The move stems from the recent recognition that Guy has been getting for her music. Her recent achievements include winning the Best Country Album award from JP Folks, the largest networking organization for musicians in the world, winning the Billy Block Talent Show in Nashville and having her band open for well-known country acts like Martina McBride, Keith Urban and Aaron Tippin.

With all the excitement of a career on the rise, Guy realizes how lucky she is and is thankful for the changes in her life.

Because her career didn't’t really take off until later in her life, after she had been married, had children and been divorced, she feels that her story can give others hope that you can do whatever you want in life.

“You’re never too old,” she said. “It’s never too late to make things happen.”
Guy, who was born in Portland but moved to Simi Valley, Calif., when she was young, has been singing and performing since she was a child.

“I started playing when I was 9, performing in public with my daddy in McDonald’s and in bars, on TV in little concerts and in beauty pageants,” she said.
Guy continued to sing as she got older but eventually decided it was time to start a family. She took several years off from singing while she raised her children but eventually her love of performing drew her back to the stage.

“When I’m up there, I feel like this is what I should be doing all the time. This is where I feel most comfortable,” she said.

So Guy played at bars and concerts wherever she could and people started to recognize her powerful voice and beautiful, honest lyrics.

The wheels that set her recent success in motion began with a cross-country tour that Guy took last fall. She visited Los Angeles and Nashville, making connections and impressing people along the way.

At a songwriters’ convention in L.A., Guy stunned an audience of 2,000 people when she performed her heartfelt song called “Mistakes like Me” at an open mic event.
The song, which she wrote after her son came home upset from being teased at school, has struck a chord with many who have heard it.

“The whole room was dead quiet, and after I was done the room exploded. It was like there was an earthquake,” she said.

The overwhelming response made its mark on Guy.
“I can still feel it. It was that good,” she said.
After her performance, she was immediately offered a publishing deal. Soon after, while in Nashville, Guy was asked to compete in the Billy Block Talent Show.

Her performance in the contest not only won her a $2,500 Gibson Guitar, but she also made a connection that led her to join creative efforts with country recording artist Sherrié Austin.

Not bad for a trip that initially, Guy couldn't even afford. A friend put her trip on his credit card because she didn’t have the money to go.

“People have gone out of their way to show their faith in me,” she said.
That is one of the many reasons that Guy is so thankful for her success. She has had great support from those around her who believe in her talent.

“Everybody around me is saying, ‘You’re going to do it, you can make it,’” she added.
Not only is Guy poised to make it on the music scene, her children seem to have inherited the talent gene.

Her children are able to write, sing, play guitar, bass and drums. During car rides, the musical family likes to compose rock operas.

Guy looks forward to her kids’ opportunities when they are surrounded by music in Nashville.

“I’m excited to see what the saturation of music around them will do. I think it will just explode their talent,” she said.

For Guy, moving to Nashville means being closer to the action, but it doesn’t mean that all she wants to record is country music. She says that she doesn’t write her songs to fit a specific genre, but instead writes what she feels and leaves it up to others to categorize it. Depending on the song, her style could be defined as country, rhythm and blues, soul or rock ‘n’ roll.

One consistent theme throughout her repertoire is lyrics that tell the story of a woman who is sensitive, feels emotions very deeply and has lived with a lot of heartbreak.
“I think I was born into melancholy,” she explained. “I could always tap into that angst.”
These days, she may be feeling a little sad about leaving her family and friends behind in Sherwood. She considers her performance at the Robin Hood Festival to be a good chance to say goodbye.

Today she is thankful for all the opportunities she’s been given in Oregon and is excited to see what the future holds.

“I just feel very thankful that I get to sing,” she said.

Melody Guy

Exit/In

January 18th 2005

Melody Guy rocked the house at Billy Block's Western Beat in Nashville January 18th THEN shut up the crowd when she sang a song called, "Mistakes Like Me". Melody's performance of her song, it made the goose bumps jump out and everyone stood at the end of that song and all you heard and saw in the room was, "WOW" what a song!

She had complete control of everyone in the house - so unbelievable. I have never heard Exit/In completely silent as during Melody's song about her child with special needs. That song and Melody's on stage performance should be seen by everyone that listens to music. People are still talking about Melody's awesome January 2005 performance at Billy Block's Western Beat!
Melody knows how to touch all your senses with her performance - my new favorite performer!

"Melody Guy has a positive and energetic presence that is a warm welcome to the country music scene. Recently, while Melody Guy was visiting the High Desert of Central Oregon, I was very excited to introduce her. Knowing their reputation and having heard her before, I was a bit surprised when the crowd response was on the quiet side after introducing them before Chris LeDoux. Obviously, these listeners had not heard her before, but by the end of the first song, the crowd's response again reminded me of what great music comes out of the Rose City. Even this far from Nashville, you would never think she was a Northwest based band. If Melody Guy is someone you haven't heard yet, you soon will, and remember! My best wishes for Melody Guy!

Album Of The Year
Year 2000

"Ready for Sunshine"

Melody Guy

Melody Guy's Indie Country Music Tour de Force Album "Ready for Sunshine" wow'd us the first time we heard it and never stopped. From the brilliant songwriting to brilliant vocal and musical performances, this collection of songs earned our choice of Album of the Year in all genres.

It is way past due for the major labels to take notice of this amazing talent. Melody's dominance in this years Country Music nominations was validated with a win for her solo penned song "The Man I Really Need."

Though her performance alone is worthy of major label consideration, her songwriting is probably even more impressive. She is more than radio ready already. (Say that 10 times fast!) There are at least 5 major hit quality songs on her album, and with the right marketing and support, some might be #1 material.

A fine example of honest writing from the heart without the cliches and crafted writing without crossing over to formulae. After hearing a slew of her new writing, I feel that 2001 will be a break out year for her as a writer and hopefully as an artist.

Stayed tuned to this girl!

Just Plain Folks
Just Plain Music Award
Nomination for Country/Bluegrass

The first time I heard this CD, I literally couldn't believe it had come to me from a member. At the time I felt it was the best independent female country CD I had EVER heard, and a year later, I feel pretty much the same way. In fact, at least in personal appeal to me, it may be the best country CD I have ever heard altogether.

This collection of 10 original songs (plus a cover at the end) is shockingly good in both quality of songs and the way they are executed by Melody and her players. I would put these songs up against ANY recent CMA or GRAMMY nominee and song for song, I think this album would win. It is that good. The lyrics are the perfect mix of hook, story, emotion and details.

As I played cuts from her CD for songwriter organizations, publishers, producers and other industry professionals, in every case the response was positive. (The only CD that got 100% support from every person I played it for.) In fact, in most cases, the first thing out of their mouth was WOW.. that is great.. and the second was "How can I get a copy?" At least 5 cuts from this CD are hits. A few might be number one with the right marketing, support and timing. Melody is no slouch as a singer either, however songs this strong would hold up under even my limited vocal prowess.

This album is not a home run. It is a Grand Slam in the bottom of the 9th inning of the 7th game of the world series! The industry people who have been dragging their feet on these songs and with Melody better get with it, or someone is going to miss out on a truly great talent in a country music industry in such dire need of quality!

Miles of Music

Melody Guy is an Oregonian with a flair for writing songs that step right up to the edge of commercial viability without flinching or falling over into vapidity. On her debut CD Ready For Sunshine (DynoTwang), she presents a straightforward, unmannered delivery with the help of an accomplished set of studio musicians, including familiar names like Aubrey Haynie (fiddle), Catherine Styron (piano, organ) and Ray Flacke (guitar). A healthy portion of the songs were co-written with producer Chris Crawford, and others appear in the credits, too, but the musical evidence suggests that Guy has found her own groove in the writing department.

The songs are substantive, catchy and memorable, and heartbreak figures prominently, which makes them not only good but eminently cover-able by better-known (though not necessarily better) singers. The sound is mostly contemporary country, with more than occasional hints of r&b. The arrangements are supportive and tasty; the musicians have those Nashville chops and elegance but avoid the fill-in-the-blanks feeling that the A-list pickers sometimes exhibit.

This is a CD with songs that wedge themselves into your memory and pop up unexpectedly, and perhaps the best tribute to Guy's talent is that when she offers Steve Earle's "Ft. Worth Blues" as the album's closer (and only cover), it fits right in with the songs that precede it.
